Give a Facebook page to someone you love

According to a recent article in Inside Facebook, Facebook is the #3 destination for people over 65. You first reaction may be, on my God, the Geritol set is getting into Facebook! Your second reaction may be, I’ve to get those pictures off of my profile! Followed by several other paranoid thoughts. Or you may think that Facebook is great way for your family to stay in touch.

So Chris Kieff (whose idea it is) and I’d like to propose that all social media users adopt the following program:

”GIVE A FACEBOOK PAGE TO SOMEONE YOU LOVE”

  • Every social media evangelist, expert, guru or whatever you call yourself needs to make at least one Facebook page for someone else this Holiday Season.
  • Create the Facebook Page for that person, include a profile photo of them.
  • Set up their friends, find their children, siblings, and loved ones.
  • Set up appropriate privacy settings.
  • Set their browser homepage to Facebook if they are technology challenged.
  • Teach them how to respond to wall postings and how to read the newsfeed.

For an older family member this gift for the holidays will have an incredible impact upon their life. You will give them the give that truly keeps on giving the whole year long. They don’t need to ever post anything on their Facebook page, they will love seeing the pictures, and being aware of what their loved ones are up to. Let them be a part of the 90% Lurkers who inhabit Facebook . The ambient awareness of the family will enrich their lives immensely.

There is now a Facebook Group for this idea, please join and help spread the word.

If anyone has any ideas on how we can take basic computer literacy to street kids in India, do email me.

The point is that you know how to do it and there are people you know that could use your help. You can assist people with money or with your time. Giving your time is more meaningful and rewarding. Everyone has a talent or skill that they can share. Everyone should donate their time to others – friends, family and people you hardly know.

So pay it forward and share your skills and knowledge.

Have a wonderful holiday season.

What to do if a leopard enters your city

Save the leopard

Widespread deforestation is leading to the destruction of the leopard's natural habitat. This often results in leopards straying into urban areas. Wildlife SOS has set up a helpline - +919871963535 - to rescue these leopards and avoid a man versus animal conflict. This pro-bono poster's objective was to highlight the encroachment issue.

The Mathuradas Mill Culture Crawl 2009

If you’ve been on the road that takes one from Lower Parel railway station to Mathuradas Mills Compound you will know it is narrow, overcrowded, a little dirty and well, perhaps even a touch unpleasant. Hundreds of people hustle by all day on this busy little stretch made busier by the market that lines it. There is a vegetable market, a butchers shop, a temple, a garage, a tailor, a printing press, the local bar, a mochi and the fish market with crows flying at dangerously low altitudes and sly black cats slinking across the street to steal fish from the noisy yet watchful fisher women.

In all of this, the designers at Red Lion, ( a division of Publicis India), have found a wealth of inspiration and a way to appreciate the chaotic culture in the form of the ‘Mathuradas Mill Culture Crawl’. It is a 3-day visual arts festival with the theme "Life around the Neighborhood” celebrating art, culture and heritage. Joining hands with Red Lion are Blue Frog, The Loft, IdeaLake, Krsna Mehta, Spenta, Publicis and Mudra.

The Crawl is a self-guided tour of community-initiated events such as music shows by Blue Frog, film screenings by Highlight. “Little Zizou” directed by Sooni Taraporewala, followed by a conversation with the director and cast outdoors on the street, (parts of the film were shot at this location), dance performances, a fashion show by WLC College, Light and Fabric Installation by Krsna Mehta, Heritage Exhibition by Red Lion at 'The Loft', web workshops by IdeaLake, visual arts, culinary arts, community art walks and much more. There are various artists living and working in Mathuradas Mills and the surrounding area, many are quite famous and on display in galleries, and more are hidden in nooks and crannies, waiting to be discovered and enjoyed.

So come enjoy some design, art, music and food this weekend. Red Lion has some funky stuff up on display and for sale at 'The Loft' a gallery very close to Blue Frog. One of us should be there to show you around.

World AIDS Day: Are you smarter than a dog?

Started on 1st December 1988, World AIDS Day is about raising money, increasing awareness, fighting prejudice and improving education. The World AIDS Day theme for 2009 is 'Universal Access and Human Rights'. World AIDS Day is important in reminding people that HIV has not gone away, and that there are many things still to be done.
According to UNAIDS estimates, there are now 33.4 million people living with HIV, including 2.1 million children. During 2008 some 2.7 million people became newly infected with the virus and an estimated 2 million people died from AIDS. Around half of all people who become infected with HIV do so before they are 25 and are killed by AIDS before they are 35.
The vast majority of people with HIV and AIDS live in lower- and middle-income countries. But HIV today is a threat to men, women and children on all continents around the world.
